Lake Champlain: Voyages of Discovery History Lecture Series

Bixby Memorial Library announces a new history lecture series that will start mid-May and conclude mid-June.  All lectures begin at 7p.m. This lecture series is a component of a grant received from the Institute of Museum and Library Serves, or IMLS entitled: Lake Champlain : Voyages of Discovery.   This series has been created to promote awareness and understanding of local history and events that occurred from early 1600's with the exploration of Lake Champlain by Samuel de Champlain up to the 300 year commemorative celebration of this event.  It is our hope that the public will enjoy this series and whet their palate for more of such programs and exhibits to be hosted throughout the state; as next year the state of Vermont ratchets up its Quadricentennial celebrations.

Tuesday, May 13   The series begins with documentary filmmaker, Caro Thompson of Broadwing Productions, and VPT .  Her lecture, Behind the scenes of “Champlain: the Lake Between” will explore the creation of her newest film. This film is slated to premiere in December of this year on Vermont Public Television.  Caro will discuss interviews and information as well as show clips from her film with the audience.  Her film captures the importance of the lake during the 17 th and 18 th century, the many cultures that settled here, and especially in Addison County. Funding for this film was provides by IMLS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Wednesday, May 21   Fort Ste. Anne: Archaeology and Memory of Vermont's Earliest European Occupation Site given by Prof. Jessica Desany of the University of Vermont. This was a French Fort at Isle LaMotte built in 1666 for protection against the Mohawks.  The fort was occupied from 1666-1671 and was the scene of many important events in its brief history.
Wednesday, May 28   Public viewing and discussion of 1940's film: Northwest Passage .  Tom Hughes, site manager of Crown Point Historic site will be leading the discussion of this classic film based on Kenneth Roberts's 1937 novel of the same name. A section of this film portrays Roger's Raid by his Rangers on an Abenaki village. Mr. Hughes will reveal the film's many historical inaccuracies and the politically incorrectness that also occurs. The film's running time is just over 2 hours.  The film stars Spencer Tracy, Robert Young and Walter Brennan.
Wednesday, June 4   Tercentenary: the 300th anniversary celebration a look back given by Prof. Kevin Dann of State University of New York at Plattsburgh. This lecture will focus on the 1909 historical celebrations held in honor of Samuel de Champlain's exploration of Lake Champlain.  This will be a refresher to lead our community forward into next year's Quadricentennial celebrations.
Wednesday, June 11

A historical interpretation of Explorer Samuel de Champlain presented by Don Thompson.  Don will present a first person account of 17 th century life in the colony of New France through costume, artifacts, and anecdotes.  Don has been an historical interpreter for the past decade, as well as a social studies teacher for over 33 years.

                 Hummingbirds Around the World

Ernest Franzgrote, a resident of Shoreham began a journey in 2000 to see 200 species of hummingbirds in a single year.  Visiting a dozen countries, from Ecuador, to Chile, to Panama, he saw 204 species and videographed 177 of the little birds.  The video,

A Big Year for Little Birds,  will be the feature of this evening's presentation.   It presents the hummingbirds in their natural habitats accompanied only by their songs.  Come witness flower mites on the face of a hummingbird and a hummingbird bathing in a pool formed in a leaf.  A preview of some of the video may be seen at
