LIBRARY
SERVICES
General Information |
| From
its earliest days in the back wing of the Chittenden Bank building,
the Bixby Memorial Free Library (at that time called the City Library)
has steadily increased its collection and services and now holds
more than 25,000 volumes. The collection includes children's, young adult, and
adult fiction and nonfiction--with many titles from the New York
Times best-seller lists--plus video and audio tapes, DVD's, books on CD, periodicals, and rare books and genealogical records. In addition
to thirty-four magazine subscriptions, the Burlington Free Press,
Addison Independent, Valley Voice, New York Times
Book Review, and other periodicals are available in the reference
room. For titles unavailable locally, interlibrary loan services
quickly provide the requested materials from other public, regional,
state, college or university libraries. |
| Local
residents (Addison Northwest School District) may obtain a library
card without charge; children who can write their names and have
their parents' permission may apply for their own cards. Residents
from out of town may obtain a library card for $7.00. Annual renewal is at the end of June. Materials are borrowed for two
weeks and renewed upon request. No overdue fines are charged, but
contributions to the conscience box are always welcome. Teachers
may borrow materials for classroom use for longer time periods.
Patrons may place a reserve on circulating materials, and will
be called when they are available to them. |
| "Third
Thursday" programs offer patrons a variety of lectures and
musical events. For example, recently Jim Blair, photo-journalist
and former editor of National Geographic, presented his Vermont
slides. Check News & Events for a schedule
of upcoming programs. Anyone interested in serving on the Third
Thursday Committee may call the library for further information.
|
| In
addition, sixteen volunteers give generously of their time and talents
and work several hours every week at Bixby Library. Volunteer responsibilities
include working at the circulation desk and tackling a variety of
tasks that are necessary to maintain library services. Anyone interested
in becoming a volunteer should call Linda Braginton (877-2211) between
1:00 and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. |
| Children's
and Youths' Programs |
| Bixby
Memorial Free Library provides a range of children's and young adult
programs and services, from weekly preschool story hours at 10:30
a.m. on Thursday to special events during vacations and the summer
reading program. Picture books, easy readers, fiction and nonfiction
texts, children's videos, magazines, and audiotape and book sets
are available; award winning children's and young adult books--Newbery,
Caldecott, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Coretta Scott King etc.--are
purchased yearly. Bixby staff welcome class visits from district
elementary schools and support parents of home schoolers with materials
from the collection and interlibrary loan. The calendar of special
events reaches high gear during the summer months with the summer
reading program. |
